His home village is in Hao village, Lieu Xa commune, Yen My district. Graduating from the primary school at the age of sixteen, he became the secretary of the Goda trading firm and started his writing career. Then, he worked in the Oriental publishing house (IDEO) for 2 years. In 1930, Vu Trong Phung's articles appeared in “Ngo Bao” newspaper. In the beginning, he wrote some short stories, however these works had no deep impression. In 1931 with the play “Khong mot tieng vang” (No resounding), his works started to lure the attention of readers. In 1936, Vu Trong Phong wrote a prose “Thi Mich”, first serialized in Hanoi Newspaper and then renamed “Giong To” (The Storm). In addition to that, two novels “Lam Di” (To be a whore) and “So do” (Dumb luck) also received great attention of readers. His works provoked a pen debate among literary critics on the topic of “Dam hay khong dam” (Lust or no lust) in the period of 1937-1938. Because of tuberculosis, he died on 13th October 1939 in Hanoi. Although passing away at the young age, Vu Trong Phung left a huge number of works such as "Chong nang len duong" (Walking with crutches - short story, 1932). "Cam bay nguoi" (Human trap – reportage, 1937), "Trung so doc dac" (Winning a lottery – novel, 1939), "Quy phai" (High-bred - novel, 1938-1939), "Dut tinh" (End of love – novel, 1941), "Vo de" (Dyke breaking – novel, 1941), "Lay nhau vi tinh" (Marriage by love – novel, 1941). Among his works, “Giong to” (The storm) and “So do” (Dumb luck) were two outstanding ones. With these two masterpieces, he became one of the greatest writers of Vietnam literature in the 20th century. Some limitations in his life as well as in his works such as “Nhan su chia re cua de tam va de tu” (The division of the third period and fourth period, 1938) and natural factors in his works reflected the conflict in the soul and artistic thought of a talented writer. As the fate of other masterpieces in the world, his works also overcame historical ups and downs. When the rain and storm are over, mountains are still there and never seem to fade, like Vu Trong Phung and his literature works.
