Le Nhu Ho (1511-1581)

Le Nhu Ho was a native of Tien Chau village, Tien Chau commune, Tien Lu district (Now belonging to Le Nhu Ho hamlet, Hong Nam commune, Tien Lu district). He was born in 1511 and died in 1581.

When he was young, despite the poor conditions of his family, he was very strong, hard-working, intelligent, studious and strategic. When he got married, he had to live in his wife’s house and his wife supported his study. When he was 30 years old, his talent in literature was well-known in many areas. He was one of three first doctoral candidates in 1541 in the reign of Mac Hien Tong King (Mac Phuc Hai). In the party celebrating his friend - Nguyen Thanh who was a native of Thanh Hoa, he ordered to kill four pigs, cook four steamers of sticky rice to prepare two trays of food. Nguyen Thanh only ate a part of his tray. After finishing his tray, Le Nhu Ho continued with the remaining food of Nguyen Thanh's tray. Nguyen Thanh said "It is said that Mo Trach Doctor (Le Nai) was a big eater. However, in this situation, your appetite is much better than Mo Trach"

It was said that once, when he went on a mission to China as requested by the King, the King of the Ming dynasty knew that he was a big eater and ordered an 18-layer tray full of food for him. They placed the fish that looked like the head of a man on the 18th layer to test his bravery. After he had finished all the lower layers of food and noticed that it was really a head made of fish, he said: “I have never tasted human meat; it is very kind of the King to give me this chance to eat the head of a northern person (Chinese), bring me a knife.” The King of the Ming dynasty respected his talent and titled him “Teacher of the Prince of two nations”.

Le Nhu Ho held many mandarin positions, including the minister position. It was said that during his mission in China, he learned how to make umbrellas. He is considered the ancestor of the umbrella-making job in Vietnam.

There are many parallel sentences praising his talent and dignity in the temple worshipping him in his native village, including the following pair of sentences:

“His brilliant talent is renowned in two countries
His fame is carved on stelae to last forever”.
