A completely successful lychee crop

This year, people in lychee growing areas in the province have had a successful crop in many aspects, which has opened up opportunities for Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychees and Hung Yen’s Trung lychees in the journey to affirm their brand and expand consumption market.

To ensure favorable consumption, right from the beginning of the season, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with localities to propagate and guide people to apply VietGAP process in production; regularly monitor developments of harmful pests and diseases to take timely treatment measures with recommended biological products or specific products. When lychees entered the ripe fruit stage, the Divisions of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Cu and An Thi districts have issued a document requesting people in lychee areas to limit using pesticides to ensure quarantine time and product quality to consumers. The activities to advertise and promote the consumption of lychees and agricultural products in the province are jointly organized by sectors and localities, contributing to enhancing the brand of Hung Yen lychees and diversifying consumption markets. Mr. Trinh Cong Binh, a small trader in Ha Giang province affirmed: I know about Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychees through media channels and consumption links with a number of cooperatives in Hung Yen province. Every year at the beginning of May, I return to Phu Cu to purchase lychees for consumption in northern provinces and cities. This year, Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychees have beautiful designs and large, even fruits. In this year's lychee crop, I have purchased about 300 tons of lychee from people in Tam Da commune and Minh Tien commune (Phu Cu).

Traders purchase and process Hung Yen’s Trung lychees

Phu Cu district is the province's key lychee growing area with about 1.2 thousand hectares. The lychee tree is not only a poverty-reducing tree for people in Phu Cu district but also a typical agricultural product of the district. This year, people are excited when the price of lychee is high, whenever lychees are harvested, they are consumed. Comrade Bui Quang Nam, Head of the Division of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Cu district, said: This year, due to the influence of the weather, farmers have more difficulty in caring for lychees, and it produces many batches of fruit on the same tree. However, the quality of lychee is rated better than that of last year with large, even fruit clusters, limiting head worms. On average, Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychee is sold favorably at a price of 30,000 VND/kg, while Hung Yen’s Trung lychee is sold at a price of about 140,000 VND/kg. To facilitate traders in purchasing lychees, lychee areas in the district have been planned and an intra-field traffic system has been built with concrete materials and 3 - 5m wide road surface. The district recommends that lychee growing households focus on ensuring the safety and hygiene of agricultural products, not using stimulants for profit during the care process, and ensuring product supply according to agreement or contract to build relationships and long-term product consumption links.

Currently, in the whole province there are over 1.3 thousand hectares of lychee area, concentrated in Phu Cu district and Da Loc commune (An Thi) with two main varieties: Hung Yen’s Trung lychee and Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychee. This year, lychee output in the province reached over 20 thousand tons; of which, Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychee accounts for over 19.6 thousand tons, and the rest is Hung Yen’s Trung lychee.

At the 2024 Hung Yen lychee market held in Ecopark Urban Area (Van Giang) on ​​the first 2 days of June, gardeners have sold 21.5 tons of Phu Cu early-ripening hybrid lychee for 40 - 45 thousand VND /kg and over 1.8 tons of Hung Yen’s Trung lychee at a price of 170 - 220 thousand VND/kg. This year, Hung Yen's fresh lychee products are mainly consumed domestically. A number of enterprises in the province have processed lychees in light syrup, contributing to diversifying products processed from lychees, reducing crop pressure and increasing competitiveness in the market.

Comrade Vu Quang Thang, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade affirmed: In this year's lychee crop, people have consumed products smoothly. To achieve the above results, the department has advised the Provincial People's Committee to promulgate programs and plans to organize trade promotion events and support brand building and product branding; coordinated with sectors and localities to strengthen propaganda and promotion of the province's lychees and agricultural products on many local and central information channels. In addition, the department has also strengthened propaganda and raised awareness of production and business organizations and individuals in effectively exploiting e-commerce platforms to sell products... Continuing the success of this year's lychee crop, currently, the department is coordinating with sectors and localities to develop plans to organize trade promotion programs, introducing longans and agricultural products of the province so that people can feel secure in production, contributing to helping the province's agricultural products open up consumption market.
