Ke Chau Molasses Trade Village

The molasses making job is a long-standing traditional job in Ke Chau village (Phu Cuong commune, Kim Dong district). Phu Hung Cuong is a fertile land area; its major agricultural product is sugar cane which is the main material for making molasses. Before and during the subsidy period, the white sugar was scarce so the molasses production prospered. The year with the highest production attracted up to 500 labourers with the output of 1,000 tonnes and a turnover of between VND 2.5 – 3 billion.

Currently, Ke Chau molasses making job is still maintained but the output is much lower than that in the past. At the peak season, there are about 150 labourers; the production output is more than 200 tonnes each year; the turnover is more or less than VND 1 billion. Currently, about 50% of work is mechanised. The sugar industry has still met the demands, so Ke Chau molasses making job can only be maintained at this current level.
